In this tutorial we will see how to create and paint rock bases for our miniatures and wargames<\/strong>. Specifically, I will show you how I quickly and easily prepare the bases for my Warhammer 40k Leagues of Votann army<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Let’s get started!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.- First, the bases are prepared. To do this, several pieces of cork are randomly cut to simulate rocks and glued onto the bases. To create rock variety, I also glued some resin rocks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Here is a link to Kromlech<\/a>, where you will see bits and rocks to decorate your bases.<\/p>\n\n

Once the rocks are glued, apply basing glue<\/a> on the surface of the base that is free of rocks, and pour sand on top. If you do not have sand, you can find multitude of companies that sell sand<\/a>, of different thicknesses<\/a>,smallrocks<\/a>, etc.<\/p>\n\n

Here you can see several bases prepared and ready to paint.<\/p>\n\n

Secondly, we will prime<\/strong> the bases with black primer<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Once the primer is dry, apply a dry brush<\/strong> with Neutral Gray 70.992<\/a> all over the base and abundantly, using the Large brush of the D series of Artis Opus. <\/a><\/p>\n\n

Next, apply another dry brush <\/strong>of Pale Blue 70.906<\/a>, but this time in a more controlled manner and focusing on the edges. For this purpose, we will use a slightly smaller brush, such as the Artis Opus Medium Series D<\/a> brush.<\/p>\n\n

5.- Different pigments are applied randomly <\/strong>all over the surface, to generate a dirty effect and make it more realistic. To be applied dry and using a synthetic brush<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

In this case I used the following pigments:<\/p>\n\n

Natural Umber – 73,109<\/a><\/p>\n\n

Burnt Umber – 73,110<\/a><\/p>\n\n

Faded Olive Green – 73,122<\/a><\/p>\n\n

To fix the pigments on the surface, optionally, Isopropyl Alcohol or Airbrush Thinner<\/a> can be used.<\/p>\n\n

6.- Several hedges\/tufts<\/strong> of different shapes, sizes and colors are placed for variety. In my case I have opted for brown, brownish green and dark green tufts.<\/p>\n\n
