This tutorial shows the first part of how to paint a purple dragon with the Vallejo Purple Dragons paint set<\/a> that you can find in the Bandua Wargames<\/a> store. We will see how to paint the purple scales and reddish wings of the dragon, using a combination of airbrush and brush.<\/p>\n\n

This fantastic miniature has been printed in resin by the Alchemy 3D prints<\/a> company. The design of the dragon is from \u201cLord of the Print\u201d. As you can see, it has a great print quality and details, so I recommend you to order your 3D prints there, because they have good prices and quality in their prints.<\/p>\n\n

And now… Let’s start with the tutorial!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Primer<\/h2>\n\n

1.- The miniature is primed using Surface Primer Black<\/a> 74.602. Optionally, apply a thin pass from above with Game Air Cold Grey<\/a> 72.750 and a pinch of Model Air Black<\/a> 71.057.<\/p>\n\n

Wings – Airbrush<\/h2>\n\n

2.- Using an airbrush, a mixture of 50% Game Color Black<\/a> 72.051 and 50% Game Color Visceral Red 72.01<\/a> 1 is applied over the wings.<\/p>\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n

3.- We apply Game Color Gory Red<\/a> 72.011 using the airbrush, but this time being more careful, leaving the nooks and crannies of the previous color.<\/p>\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n

4.- A mixture of 50% Game Color Cadmium Skin<\/a> 72.099 and 50% Game Color Gory Red<\/a> 72.011 is applied with an airbrush, reducing the area of application, focusing only on the folds to generate more contrast.<\/p>\n\n

5.- To finish with the wings, very diluted Game Color Gory Red<\/a> 72.011 is applied using an airbrush to recover a bit of the reddish and organic color of the wings.<\/p>\n\n

Purple Scales – Airbrush<\/h2>\n\n

6.- Using a brush, apply a mixture of 60% Game Color Hexed Lichen 72.015<\/a> 72.015, 30% Game Color Black<\/a> 72.051 and 10% Game Color Imperial Blue <\/a> 72.020.<\/p>\n\n

7.- With the airbrush, we apply abundantly, but without applying in the darkest areas, Game Color Hexed Lichen<\/a> 72.015. It is important to mask the wings so we dont paint over the previous work.<\/p>\n\n

8.- To apply the first light, a mixture of 40% Game Color Hexed Liche<\/a>n 72.015, 40% Model Color Magenta 70.945 and 20% Game Color Glacier Blue<\/a> 72.095 is used. This time, as in previous steps with the airbrush, we are going to reduce the area where we apply these lights.<\/p>\n\n

8.- To apply the first light, a mixture of 40% Game Color Hexed Lichen<\/a> 72.015, 40% Model Color Magenta<\/a> 70.945 and 20% Game Color Glacier Blue<\/a> 72.095 is used.<\/p>\n\n

10- To achieve the final light with the airbrush, a mixture of 10% Game Color Hexed Lichen<\/a>72.015 and 90% Game Color Glacier Blue<\/a> 72.095 is used, very diluted and only in small points of maximum light.<\/p>\n\n

11.- To finish with the airbrush and create a little more contrast between shadows and lights, we apply the following very diluted mixture in the shadow areas: 70% Game Ink Violet<\/a> 72.087, 20% Game Color Black<\/a> 72.051 and 10% Game Color Imperial Blue<\/a> 72.020.<\/p>\n\n

Purple Scales – Brush<\/h2>\n\n

12.- From this step, only the brush will be used. All dragon scales are outlined using a mixture of 60% Game Color Hexed Lichen 72.015<\/a> and 40% Game Color Glacier Blue<\/a> 72.095. This edge highlighting will not be applied in the areas of maximum light yet.<\/p>\n\n

13.- We increase the luminosity by painting on the scales of the previous step, but this time reducing the area to be painted. The following mixture will be used: 40% Game Color Hexed Lichen 72.015<\/a> and 60% Game Color Glacier Blue<\/a> 72,095.<\/p>\n\n

14.- In a third outline, we focus on the scales that we paint with greater luminosity, applying 20% Game Color Hexed Lichen<\/a> 72.015 and 80% Glacier Blue Game Color<\/a> 72.095. Finally, small dots are applied only in the brightest areas, using only Game Color Glacier Blue <\/a> 72.095.<\/p>\n\n

Wings – Brush<\/h2>\n\n

15.- The stippling brush technique will be used for the wings. First, Game Color Gory Red 72.011 is applied to the wings.<\/a><\/p>\n\n

16.- The area of application will be reduced, this time using 40% Game Color Cadmium Skin <\/a> 72.099 and 60% Game Color Gory Red 72.011.<\/a><\/p>\n\n

17.- To finish with the wings, the stippling area is reduced more, with a mixture of 70% Game Color Cadmium Skin<\/a> 72.099 and 30% Game Color Gory Red<\/a> 72.011.<\/p>\n\n
