This tutorial shows how to paint NMM (Non Metallic Metal) armor with a warm golden tone using the Game Color range of paints. We used Games Workshop’s Dante (Warhammer 40,000) figure for this tutorial. The painting of the armor is inspired by the golden NMM armor by Nikolas Rubens (Nrmpaint).
Let’s get started!
The miniature is primed with Hobby Paint Black 28.012 or Primer Black 70.602. Photograph the miniature under a spotlight to use as a reference to know where to place the lights and shadows.
Paint the entire miniature with a mixture of three parts Parasite Skin 72.042 and one part Nocturnal Red 72.111. This will be the base color from now on.
Using the photo of the black primed miniature as a reference, paint all the areas where the light hits with the base color mixed with a little Gold Yellow 72.007.
Add another part of Gold Yellow 72.007 to the previous mixture, slightly reducing the area of application.
Add another part of Gold Yellow 72.007 to the previous mixture, further reducing the area to be painted. A total of three parts of Gold Yellow are added to the base color.
Using only pure Gold Yellow 72.007, continue to narrow the area to be covered.
To create more contrast, apply a mixture of the base color with a little Charred Brown 72.045 and Nocturnal Red 72.111 to the unpainted areas, i.e. the shadows.
A mixture of two parts Orange Fire 72.008, two parts Gold Yellow 72.007 and one part Nocturnal Red 72.111 is used to simulate reflections on the armor in the shadow areas.
The central part of the reflections is emphasized by adding a little bit of Gold Yellow 72.007 to the previous mixture.
Use a mixture of Charred Brown 72.045 and Black 72.051 to outline all the shadows created by the nooks and crannies of the armor.
Use Gold Yellow 72.007 to outline all the edges of the armor.
An additional highlight is applied to the areas of maximum light on the armor, with a mixture of Gold Yellow 72.007 and Model Color Ice Yellow 70.858.
The final highlight is painted with two parts of Model Color Ice Yellow 70.858 and one part of Moon Yellow 72.005, reducing the area of application as much as possible.
In order to better appreciate this golden NMM, the remaining non-armor parts are painted with Black 72.051.
